About the San Francisco Minecraft World

San Francisco is arguably the most visually striking Minecraft conversion available because the city's extreme terrain translates directly into the strongest three-dimensional character of any real-world map. Where most cities give you a flat grid with buildings, SF gives you buildings scaling actual mountains — Lombard Street, the 25% grades, and the steady climb from the Embarcadero to Twin Peaks all render faithfully with real elevation data.

What's Included in the San Francisco World

Golden Gate Bridge

The bridge spans 2.7 km with its towers at 227 m — in Minecraft these towers are among the tallest structures you can build to real scale. The approach roads wind up from the Presidio with accurate terrain.

Fisherman's Wharf

The waterfront piers jut perpendicular to the shoreline with distinctive rectangular footprints. The area's flat grade contrasts sharply with the steep hills just a few blocks inland.

Chinatown

The densest street grid in SF, with 24 square blocks of tight building spacing. The narrow alleys (Ross Alley, Spofford) render as distinct single-block-wide passages.

Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz sits 2 km offshore — including it requires extending your bbox north into the Bay. The island's prison building and lighthouse appear at correct positions, with the surrounding water all at sea level.

Plus all streets, buildings, parks, and terrain elevation from OpenStreetMap data — faithfully converted to Minecraft blocks. Available for both Java and Bedrock Edition.

What Makes San Francisco Special in Minecraft

  • SF's elevation ranges from sea level (Embarcadero) to 282 m (Mt. Davidson). The per-block terrain step gives you dramatic vertical drama — Lombard Street's hairpins descend visibly over multiple blocks.
  • The grid actually consists of several grids at different angles (SOMA is rotated vs. the northern grid). This produces the long diagonal of Market Street, which is one of the best geographic 'anchors' in Minecraft.
  • Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro dominate the south-central area. A selection that includes them gets natural elevation without needing to include water or long flat stretches.
  • The Presidio and Golden Gate Park are both included and render their paths, meadows, and (in Golden Gate Park) the lake system.

Recommended Selection for San Francisco

For most players: a 3–4 km² selection centered on downtown captures the Financial District, Chinatown, North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, and the climb up Russian and Nob Hills — this is where SF's terrain is most dramatic. To include the Golden Gate Bridge, extend west to about 6 km² (Large tier). Full-peninsula selections (~15 km²) include Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park, the Sunset, and the Mission, but at that scale the experience becomes more of an exploration map than a focused build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in the San Francisco Minecraft world?
The San Francisco world includes all buildings, roads, parks, and terrain elevation from OpenStreetMap data. Key landmarks like Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown are faithfully recreated block by block.
How do I import the world into Minecraft?
For Java Edition, extract the zip and copy the world folder to your .minecraft/saves/ directory. For Bedrock Edition, double-click the .mcworld file to import automatically.
Do I need any mods to play?
No mods required. The world works with vanilla Minecraft, both Java and Bedrock Edition.
Is the terrain really accurate enough to show the hills?
Yes. We source elevation from AWS Terrain Tiles at zoom 15, which gives you about 4.8 m of horizontal resolution. SF's hills (Nob Hill at 113 m, Russian Hill at 100 m, Telegraph Hill at 84 m) all render with the correct relative heights, and streets climb over them at accurate grades rather than plowing through.
Does the Golden Gate Bridge actually connect to something?
Yes. The bridge is modeled with full deck geometry and connects to the Presidio on the south (with the correct tunnel under Doyle Drive) and the Marin Headlands on the north side if your selection extends that far. If you want just the bridge approach, include Fort Point and Crissy Field — that keeps the file small.
